[accordion_item title =”Sempozyum Hakkında – About the Symposium”]

Osmanlı Devleti’nde Cezâir-i Bahr-i Sefîd olarak adlandırılan Ege Adaları, Anadolu’nun doğal uzantıları durumunda olup, bazıları sahillerimize iki kilometreden daha yakındır. Söz konusu adalar genel olarak üç gruba ayrılmaktadır. Bunlar;

About the Symposium

The Aegean Islands, which are called Cezayir-i Bahr-i Sefîd in the Ottoman Empire, are the natural extensions of Anatolia and some of them are closer than two kilometers to the Turkish coasts.
The islands are divided into three groups. These are; The Northeastern Aegean Islands (Thassos, Samothraki, Imbros, Tenedos, Lemnos);  Saruhan Islands(The Eastern Aegean Islands) (Lesvos/ Mytilene, Chios, Psara, Samos, Ikaria)  and The Dodecanese Islands (Rhodes, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Astypalia, Nisyros, Tilos, Symi, Halki, Karpathos, Kassos).
Throughout history, the Aegean Islands have been home to various civilizations. The conquest of the islands by the Ottomans has begun by Fatih Sultan Mehmet and completed by Kanunî Sultan Süleyman. These islands remained under Ottoman rule until the Battle of Tripoli. As the war continues, Italy occupied the Dodecanese Islands to force the Ottoman State to leave Tripoli and Cyrenaica. Other Otoman Islands in the Aegean Sea were seized by Greece during the Balkan Wars. The problem has found a place on the agenda of the states called The Great Powers and the ownership of the islands has been left to their decision. On 14 February 1914, these states declared their decision  with a joint  note which states  Except for Imbros, Tenedos and Kastellorizo, all the islands in the Greek occupation were left to Greece. The Dodecanese Islands have not been mentioned in this note.
The problem preserved its currency and importance in the Lausanne negotiations. With the peace treaty signed in Lausanne and the attached protocols, a certain solution was made for the question of islands. However, discussions and negotiations continued. During Word War II, there have been important struggles on the Aegean, and these struggles have also affected Turkey. With the Paris Treaty at the end of the war, it was decided that the Dodecanese Islands would be devolved to Greece. Greek attitudes contrary to the treaties, caused serious problems in relations between Turkey and Greece after World War II. Problems such as the breadth of territorial waters, the delimitation of the Aegean Continental Shelf, militarization of Eastern Aegean Islands contrary to the provisions of international agreements, the determination of the status of island, islets and rocks the sovereignty of which had not been given over with treaties, air space related problems occasionally cause tension in relations between Turkey and Greece.
The aim of this symposium is to discuss the political, economic, military, cultural and social history of the Aegean Islands and important developments affecting the region with all the details and to bring them into a scientific debate.
